Drainage network
The main objectives of water quality monitoring for municipal drainage networks are to enhance the capability of pollution source tracing and provide support for drainage network management. It enables close monitoring of different functional areas and key pollutants, strictly controls illegal discharges, and provides a basis for sewage allocation and water quality prediction for wastewater treatment plants. This allows wastewater treatment plants to adjust process parameters, ensure stable effluent quality, and provides a basis for studying the migration patterns of pollutants in the pipeline network.
The online monitoring locations and their monitoring parameters in the drainage network are as follows:
Monitoring Location
Pumping Station
Application Description
Pumping stations serve as pressurized 调配 positions for main sewage pipelines, where branch pipes across the city collect sewage into main pipes and converge at the station. They are responsible for pressurized transportation of sewage to wastewater treatment plants, emergency drainage during heavy rainfall, and 调配 of sewage to other areas. On-line water quality monitoring at pumping stations can provide early warnings for wastewater treatment plants or pre-evaluate pollution caused by sewage discharge into receiving water bodies during heavy rainfall.
Monitoring indicators for pumping stations may include pH, conductivity, COD, suspended solids, ammonia nitrogen, water level, flow rate, etc.

一、Overview
Industrial Zone
Different water quality monitoring plans should be formulated for industrial zones based on their types. Network water quality monitoring in industrial zones primarily aims to detect illegal discharges and leakage incidents. When such abnormal events occur, on-line water quality analyzers can not only collect data as evidence but also alert downstream wastewater treatment plants to take corresponding measures to avoid affecting their normal operation.
Monitoring indicators for industrial zones may include pH, conductivity, COD, suspended solids, ammonia nitrogen, heavy metals, fluoride ions, oil in water, etc.
Residential Area
The water quality of domestic sewage in residential areas changes cyclically within a day, following a regular pattern. Monitoring parameters mainly include conventional indicators, as total phosphorus and total nitrogen may undergo significant uncertain changes during sewage migration. Compared with water quality monitoring at pumping stations, domestic sewage quality in residential areas is more effective for early warning of influent water quality at wastewater treatment plants.
On-line monitoring indicators for residential areas may include pH, COD, suspended solids, ammonia nitrogen, etc.
Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Well
All urban sewage pipelines pass through a combined sewer overflow well before entering the wastewater treatment plant. When the liquid level in the well is high and reaches a certain filling degree, excess sewage will be directly discharged into rivers via overflow. During rainstorms, CSO overflow into rivers can cause severe pollution to natural water bodies.
On-line monitoring indicators for CSO wells may include COD, ammonia nitrogen, suspended solids, water level, flow rate, etc.
Stormwater Detention Facilities
These facilities mainly store early-stage stormwater, which has high concentrations of various pollutants. If such high-concentration pollutants are directly discharged into receiving water bodies through stormwater treatment, the large pollution load may exceed the self-purification capacity of the receiving water bodies for a long time.
Monitoring indicators for stormwater detention facilities mainly include conventional indicators, such as pH, COD, ammonia nitrogen, suspended solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, water level, etc. For detention facilities near industrial zones, monitoring of special pollutants such as heavy metals, fluoride, oil in water, and cyanide can be added.
Pipeline Outfall
These are mostly outlets where pumping stations discharge into rivers or wastewater treatment plants release effluent into rivers. Backflow can increase the water volume in the pipeline network, reduce pollutant concentration, and increase the hydraulic load and treatment difficulty for wastewater treatment plants.
Conventional parameters for pipeline outfalls may include COD, ammonia nitrogen, and suspended solids.
